I’ve long said that keeping a capsule wardrobe for my kids makes organization, laundry, and so much of my life easier. I try my best to limit it to less than 15 pieces per child, per season. Ideally, I get 10 new items and then carry over a couple items from the previous season (like cardigans, onesies, etc). I often gave people ask where I get the kids’ clothes and my answer is always the same: Zara and Jamie Kay. I try my best to shop sales, and I stock up on items I love that are on sale in sizes they will eventually grow into. Here are my tips for creating a summer wardroe for your kids:
1. Choose a color scheme

The color scheme is pretty much always the same for me, haha. I love cream and white, blues and greens. For Addie, I add in some blush, but I still stick mostly to cream and muted blues/greens. The goal in sticking to a color scheme is that almost everything goes together, so you can mix & match shirts with shorts, pants, etc. A note on whites: people often ask how I keep their white clothes WHITE. When they get stains (more-so with Alex than Addie at this stage of life), I immediately treat it with Thieve bar soap, and then wash it on HOT water with some homemade bleach, then I don’t dry it until the stain is out. Dirt has never been an issue. Our biggest stains have come from beets and strawberries.
2. Choose easy to wash fabrics & prints
I find that linen and denim work best. I basically never get polyester. Similarly, I find that small prints make it a bit easier to hide stains. I do the small prints mostly for Addie because she’s at an age where she easily drops food on herself while eating.
3. Don’t overthink it
Purchase what speaks to you and the things you love. Don’t think about it too much. Try your best to realllly limit what you are purchasing. For me it’s no more than 7 bottoms and no ore than 7 tops total, and I try to get things that are interchangeable. For both of my kids, I love the shirtless look so you’ll often find them in overalls or rompers, with no shirt underneath. Accordingly I only get Alex a max of 4 new shirts each season, and he usually has 1-2 from last season that he still fits in.
